Vancouver, BC - Sutton recently won a gold medal in the Corporate Triathlon Challenge, a competition that attracts elite, international triathletes. Nineteen-year-old Lowell Rockliffe from Vancouver represented Sutton. Winning this race was a proud moment for Sutton and for Lowell, who has overcome significant challenges in his young life.
Just three years ago, at age 16, Lowell was struck by a car while biking and was unable to train for triathlons. He had loved sports for as long as he could remember and had competed at the BC Summer Games where he won gold and silver medals. After the accident, he began to rebuild his strength and endurance over the next several months. Then, misfortune struck again with a sudden and potentially serious abdominal hernia. Lowell was forced to take another break from racing. The Corporate Triathlon Challenge in June was Lowell's first major competition and the gold medal victory was particularly impressive considering his previous injuries.
"It was an exciting win with the awards ceremony in GM Place," says Lowell. "I was happy to run for Sutton. I'm considering getting my real estate license. I've always been interested in real estate-it's one of people's most important investments."
"My big dream in terms of athletics is to go to the 2012 Olympics. I'll also take part in the 2009 Canada Games in Prince Edward Island. It will be the first time that there has been a triathlon event at the Canada Games so I could win their first-ever medal in this sport."
The Corporate Triathlon Challenge is coordinated by the International Triathlon Union. This year's Challenge took place in Vancouver's scenic West End. The race began with a 750m swim to Second Beach, followed by a 20km bike ride (two laps around Stanley Park), then a 5km run along English Bay.
