Brampton, ON - From an impoverished village in Tanzania to her own province and neighbourhood, Carol Borg of Sutton Group - Professional Realty Inc.*, is proactive and dedicated to her charity work. Three years ago, her journey of caring kicked into high gear with her first Friends for Life Bike Rally. Carol and hundreds of other participants biked 600km from Toronto to Montreal in just six days. Proceeds of the Rally benefit the People with Aids Foundation in Toronto. This initial experience created new friendships and took Carol down unexpected pathways.
"I originally was motivated to get involved as a way to train for a Kilimanjaro climb in Tanzania," says Carol. "The training for the Rally was sometimes gruelling but, interestingly, the actual ride was easier because I got carried by the adrenaline and energy of the group. There was a great sense of camaraderie. It also helped to put a face to what I was doing-it made me realize that there are so many people affected by HIV and AIDS. This summer was the third year in a row that I participated."
Carol got more than she bargained for from her first Rally just as she did from her trip to Kilimanjaro. "While I was in Africa, I took a safari in the Serengeti. One day, I saw a group of children standing outside a cinderblock building and I asked the driver to take me back. There were 30 AIDS orphans living and getting a very basic education in one tiny building. When I got home, I called up friends and clients and asked them if they had clothing, textbooks and other supplies they could donate to the Good Hope Centre. The response was wonderful-I got more than enough to fill a container! I paid to ship it to the schoolmaster in Tanzania. I would like to go back next year to lend a hand. My goal now is to raise money to help them expand their building."
This summer, she spent a week volunteering at Camp BUCKO, also known as the Burn Camp for Kids in Ontario. She had several children in her care. "I made sure they got to their activities and meals on time and that they were safe as they had fun. I also gave guitar lessons during their free time. These kids have a lot of damage done to their bodies but certainly none to their hearts and minds. I was inspired to volunteer at the camp by my friend Nancy, who suffered burns to 90% of her body in a car accident. I admire the fact that she has been volunteering at Camp BUCKO for years."
