Play from the Heart
Ottawa, ON – Pickleball players of all skill levels are invited to the first ever Pickleball Tournament in support of the University of Ottawa Heart Institute Foundation set for June 10, 2023, at the RA Centre in Ottawa.
Colin Zappia is the co-founder and co-producer of this tournament and serves on the board of directors of the Heart Institute. His goal was to produce a fun event that would attract a wide demographic.
“Pickleball is a fast-growing sport, one in which people of every age are able to participate, and we have a great facility in the RA Centre, who partnered with us to make this happen,” Colin says. “Pickleball Canada's offices are there too and, after meeting with both organizations, everyone was quite excited about the tournament.”
Participants will enjoy a boxed lunch before playing, plus snacks and beverages throughout the day followed by a post-tournament celebration to revel in the day’s highlights. There will be plenty of surprises including prizes for the top fundraiser and the best dressed team.
“Each participant will receive their own fundraising website when they register and we're asking them to get donations from friends, family, and co-workers. The fee is $100 per person, but if they raise $1,000 as a team, we'll refund the fee, or they can turn it into a charitable donation for their taxes.”

Colin has been an active supporter of the Heart Institute since his father suffered a fatal heart attack in 2007 at the age of 60. In addition to volunteering on the board, he has found innovative ways to fundraise including organizing a golf event and donating for every save by a goalie in every game in the Ontario Hockey League during Heart Month in 2022.
