Pickleball Raises $30,500 for Heart Institute

Ottawa, ON – Daniel Alfredsson, the former Ottawa Senators captain, and Hockey Hall of Fame member, was a special guest at the inaugural Ottawa Pickleball Classic on June 10, 2023. The hockey legend was teamed up Tara Campeau, a mother of six sporting a Queen of Hearts costume, who was chosen through a raffle that raised $1,350. The hockey legend was a gracious player who kept things light (even making a behind-the-back shot). The first match was against Dr. Rob Beanlands (Deputy Director General, Cardiologist) and Bonnie Bowes (Chief Nursing Officer and vice president of quality, risk and health information) and the second against Graham Richardson and Jeremie Charon of CTV Ottawa.
Colin Zappia is a Sutton Broker, who serves as a director on the board of the Heart Institute. He has initiated multiple fundraisers over the years to honour his late father including organizing this tournament along with Jake Levinson. They are both grateful for support from sponsors and the Ottawa Heart Institute Foundation team led by president Lianne Laing and her colleagues Lindsay Firestone and Vanessa Gomes.

“There were some incredible matches and rallies throughout the day,” notes Colin. “We encouraged people to wear costumes and have fun with it; there was a prize for the most creative costume.”
The event lasted from morning to afternoon and participants enjoyed refreshments as well as lunch provided by Italian full-service grocery store Mercato Zacconi.
“It was wonderful to experience the excitement from the crowd when we announced the total of $30,500 at the end,” Colin says. “We will absolutely hold this event again next year, hopefully bigger and better!”
