Backpacks for Children in Need

Vancouver, B.C. – Corwin Kwan and his wife, Yvonne, recently made a special donation to the Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre Society. The couple provided 12 backpacks filled with school supplies including binders, notebooks, scissors, pencils, erasers, rulers, thermal lunch kits, toothbrushes, toothpaste and more. Their donation will make learning more enjoyable and successful for children in need from kindergarten to post-secondary school.

The Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre Society typically provides 500 backpacks to students in kindergarten to Grade 12 within Metro Vancouver. This year, the organization aims to assist as many as 800 youth including some in post-secondary school.

Corwin appreciates the value of this program. “We always try to find new ideas every year to contribute to society. Serving and supporting others in the community makes us feel good. I feel so honored that I can help. Twelve backpacks are not that much, but I hope to inspire other REALTORS® to join in this movement.”

Corwin and Yvonne produced a video to provide others with information about the backpack program: https://youtu.be/pSZpGeEksRY.

In the video, Corwin interviews Kaila Wong, a representative from the Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre Society. She notes that an influx of student registrations has pushed this year’s demand up by 60 percent to approximately 800 backpacks. In addition, the society receives requests directly from schools; last year, the charity donated 500 bundles of paper.

In Corwin’s interview, he asks Kaila how other people can get involved. “People can email us at info@vafcs.org or donate by visiting www.vafcs.org since our office is currently closed to the public because of the pandemic,” she says. “We also have an online, two-week campaign for donations beginning September 27th.”

In addition to select community projects, Corwin has volunteered with St. John Ambulance for 29 years providing patient care at countless events and helping to set up a field hospital at the Vancouver Convention Centre.
