Beach Clean-up Party

Vancouver, B.C. – Corwin Kwan and his wife Yvonne organized a clean-up of Spanish Banks that was incredibly rewarding. The beach between UBC and Kitsilano is popular with locals and tourists, but the litter they leave behind is unsightly and poses a risk to wildlife including birds and sea creatures.

The City of Vancouver lacks the personnel and budget to keep the area pristine, so Corwin, his wife, and a team of another 11 volunteers took on the task one afternoon.

“Over the course of approximately one hour, we collected an impressive 40 pounds of garbage by dedicating our time and energy to gather litter and debris from both the park and the parking lot,” Corwin says.

“By organizing this neighborhood clean-up, we aimed to make a positive impact on the environment and enhance the overall cleanliness of Spanish Banks. It was heartening to see the community come together and actively participate in this initiative.”

Corwin and the entire team of volunteers discovered that their minor time commitment made a real difference and was personally rewarding.  

“We believe that such activities not only contribute to the beautification of our surroundings but also foster a sense of unity and responsibility within the community,” Corwin reflects. “We hope to inspire others to take similar actions and continue to make a difference in our local environment.”

This year, Corwin also donated 25 backpacks full of supplies and lunch kits for kids in need to replace items stolen from the Kamloops Salvation Army; he planted trees in North Vancouver; and, for three decades, he has volunteered with St. John Ambulance providing First Aid, training other volunteers, and offering his culinary skills at select events.
