Pilots Treat Kids to Fantastic Flights
Updated: Dec 4, 2018
Nanaimo, B.C. – Children who are fascinated by flight will have the chance to climb into the cockpit of a small aircraft and even hold the steering column—with supervision, of course! The Nanaimo Flying Club is proud to host COPA for Kids on June 16, 2018 from 11 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Volunteers from the Canadian Owners Pilot Association (COPA), including Ken Welte, will donate their time and use their own aircraft and fuel to give kids a ride to remember.
“The focus is on education and awareness of aviation as both a hobby and a career,” says Ken. “As a pilot, I am blessed with the opportunity to aviate. I always try to encourage young people to explore the idea of aviation from becoming a pilot, to maintenance, to becoming a flight attendant, etc.”
COPA for Kids provides young people ages 8 to 17 with a free introduction to the world of aviation. Ken notes that everyone is welcome to visit during the event, which will take place at the Nanaimo Flying Club within the Nanaimo Regional Airport.
“This event showcases our hobby and is a great outreach program allowing non-aviation types the opportunity to meet and ask questions of the aviation community.”
In addition to being a busy REALTOR® and helping at COPA for Kids, Ken has been a volunteer instructor at the Air Cadet squadron in Nanaimo for the past 21 years. Almost every week, Ken provides cadets with education on airframes, navigation, engines, air law, meteorology and airmanship.
Ken also supervises cadets on a variety of field exercises. Excursions have included multi- day hikes into the wilderness to learn orienteering and other skills, tours of massive aircraft carriers and more.
