The Joy of Nourishment

Surrey, B.C. – The bounty of the summer is making its way to people in need thanks in part to the dedicated team at Sutton – Premier Realty. Every few months, several volunteers from this office deliver cash donations and non-perishable food to the Surrey Food Bank then work a four-hour shift organizing the warehouse and preparing packages for distribution.

The food bank’s clientele range in age from newborn infants to the elderly. Even working parents rely on the food bank since wages have not kept pace with the rising costs of housing, food, transportation, daycare, etc.

Graham Newberry is one of the Sutton – Premier Realty associates who has volunteered countless hours over the years. He loves helping his neighbours and working alongside his colleagues, but his motivation runs even deeper; he wants to pay forward the kindness he received.

"I like volunteering at the food bank because, unfortunately, we all go through a few tough stretches in our life journey, and about 20 years ago after a divorce and some good and bad decisions I made, I had an immediate need to utilize the services of the food bank,” Graham says. “They provided me with groceries for about six months and this helped me get my act together and get out of that rut.”

Now a successful REALTOR®, Graham never forgets the difference the food bank made in his life. “With gratitude for having that social safety net in my time of need, and understanding that anyone can have a 'blip' on the radar of life and require help... I wanted to give back to my community and volunteer at the place that helped me and now many others in a meaningful way.”

Spending a few hours chipping in at the Surrey Food Bank is something he highly recommends. “It's fun! There’s a great sense of comradery. It brings me and all of us so much joy.”
