MVP at the Abbotsford Airshow
Greater Vancouver Area, B.C. – In a grueling August heatwave, Corwin Kwan didn’t hesitate to spend hours in front of a hot grill cooking multiple meals for more than 80 volunteers with St. John Ambulance (SJA) at the recent Abbotsford International Airshow. This Sutton REALTOR® has dedicated 29 years to SJA providing First Aid at community events, training other volunteers, setting up an emergency field hospital, and pitching in at a leadership development camp for youth.
“I was really happy to be part of the SJA support team providing the First Aid volunteers with sustenance during their lengthy shifts,” Corwin says. “Cooking outdoor is always fun yet challenging due to the environmental factors, but if you have the right equipment and skill, you can cook anything.”
Corwin was invited to take on the catering role for the airshow by Ken Welte, a fellow Sutton REALTOR® and SJA volunteer.
“He's an amazing guy, an incredible cook, and a very humble person,” Ken says. “I actually got to know Corwin at an SJA event last year during a plane crash simulation at the Vancouver airport. I recognized him from a Sutton Spirit story and since then we have become pretty friendly at Sutton events like the award gala.”

The SJA volunteers at last weekend’s Abbotsford airshow were so appreciative of Corwin’s contribution that he was named the event’s MVP. With an incredible 300 patient calls/contacts during the airshow, it is no wonder the team was hungry!
Ken notes, “Corwin was only scheduled to cook breakfast and dinner Saturday and Sunday, but he ended up hanging out for most of the weekend and helping out with some logistics tasks as well, I can't say enough good things about the guy and his lovely wife, who also helped with the prep and cooking.”
Corwin excels under pressure including running the grill at the Pacific National Exhibition (PNE). “I still remember managing 12 full size grills and cooking pancakes outdoors for 1,000 people during the PNE opening day for several years.”
