An Apple a Day Keeps the Doctor Away

Henry Mews, Ottawa 67’s defenceman

Ottawa, ON – As a new Director on the board of the University of Ottawa Heart Institute Foundation, Colin Zappia is pleased to announce his latest fundraiser. He has teamed up with Ottawa 67’s defenceman Henry Mews to ensure that Canadians continue to receive worldclass cardiac care at a lead-edge facility that annually provides more than 221,000 patient visits.

This season, each time that Henry makes an assist (a.k.a. an apple), both Colin and Henry along with the defenceman’s family will make an $11 donation to the Foundation.

The Mews family are strong supporters of this cause; in 2022, they donated $1 million to the Foundation. Joining them in this effort are Randy Robitaille (Henry’s agent and a former NHL player), as well as a fourth donor. Together they will donate $44 per assist.

“I’ve created this initiative to help raise awareness and generate new money for this great hospital,” Colin says. “The funds raised are being used to further the research efforts that are giving more and more people the gift of time. Doing this in partnership with Henry, the Mews family, Randy and another donor, will help bring awareness to the cause and further our reach.”

During the 68 games this season, Henry could potentially get between 40 and 50 assists, although that number is anyone’s best guess at this point. They selected $11 as the donation amount because that is Henry’s jersey number.

Colin helped to organize successful golf and pickleball tournaments earlier this year, but his first love is hockey. Since 2016, he’s been the Ottawa 67’s Colour Analyst offering an informative and entertaining break down of plays and stats. He was also the television host from 2007–2009. His father, Tony Zappia, coached the Cornwall Royals in the 1980s. Colin laced up too; his first ever coach was Randy Robitaille’s father.

Donations to the University of Ottawa Heart Institute Foundation can be made by visiting the Heart Institute Foundation’s website (https://www.ottawaheart.ca), or by sending a text with a heart emoji to 456-78 where an instant $5 donation is made. Funds raised will ensure patients in Ottawa and across the country receive exceptional care.
