Five Friends, Three Runs and a Turkey

Vancouver, B.C. – In two and a half weeks, David Eng volunteered at three outdoor sporting events: the CIBC Run for the Cure Vancouver, which raised $819,000 for cancer treatment and research; the Turkey Trot, which supports local food banks; and Under Armour Eastside 10K, a run that showcases the downtown area and encourages the participation of athletes with disabilities.

As a veteran of well over 100 road races and other community events in the past decade, David has come to appreciate the value of fostering a strong volunteer team. He served as a Zone Captain and Advanced Lead Cyclist with his friend Carol Song (pictured left with Alyssa, a volunteer manager) . His friends Debra, Eileen and Annette helped out at the Turkey Trot.

Although David has fun as a volunteer, he also takes his roles seriously. Typically, he keeps runners and cyclists safe as a lead cyclist or route marshal. Recently, his roles have evolved to include a new responsibility: mentoring the next generation of volunteers.

CIBC Run for the Cure

“I try to create a positive experience so people will volunteer again. The CIBC Run for the Cure was a great opportunity. It’s designed for everyone—including kids and pets—to run or walk either the 1K or 5K route. With a broad mix of participants, there was a broad mix of volunteers. No pet volunteers,” he says with a laugh, “but we did have a lot of teenagers joined by their parents and grandparents.

“Carol and I felt a sense of responsibility to help the young volunteers have a positive experience and as much fun as possible in their roles. They arrived at about 7:30 a.m. (an hour before the start time) so we could mentor them on their responsibilities. We deployed a team of about 20 street marshals from Prior Street to 6th Avenue. For many of these teens, it was their first volunteer experience, and they were all smiles. I think they had an awesome time.”

David is also appreciative of the organizers doing their best to ensure these events go off without a hitch. One of them is Alyssa, a volunteer manager (pictured above with Carol and David), who has worked at multiple events with David. Together they are helping to build a caring, connected community
