Ajax, ON – It was a record-setting year for the members of Knitting and Crochet for Community: by the end of December, they had crafted 4,653 hats, mittens, blankets and more and delivered them to hospitals, long-term care facilities, homeless shelters, and others. Sutton REALTOR® Whitney Collins-Wilson launched the group in 2020.
“Through Knitting and Crochet for Community (KCC), several crafters have told me that their hobby once again has a purpose and they feel connected,” Whitney says. “We have twice a month meet-ups, where new friends have been made, old acquaintances have been re-connected, and everyone helps each other out.”
In addition to their in-person gatherings, the KCC Facebook group is “growing wildly” and now has 778 members, who have found new meaning in a beloved hobby.
“Several retired members have thanked me for creating KCC and giving them a purpose to their crafting,” says Whitney. “They needed an outlet to help others with their talent.”
And help they have!
By the end of December, Whitney reports that KCC donated items to 22 organizations. These were the top five recipients:
986 hats for newborn babies at Scarborough General Hospital
668 baby blankets, sweaters, toys, and adult hats to Hands Up Canada
588 neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) blankets and hats to Hugs for Hendrix
521 hats and mittens to Back Door Mission
357 hats, mittens, and scarves to Operation Scugog's coat drive
Ajax Pickering Hospital, Lakeridge Gardens and Abbeylawn long-term care facilities, earthquake relief in Turkey, The Lemon Project, remote northern regions, and an animal shelter were among the other recipients.
In December, Whitney was honoured with a 2023 Ajax Community Award – Arts & Culture for her efforts with this group.
