Helping Homeless Canadians

Angela, Laura, Ken and Tisha

Nanaimo, B.C. and Oakville, ON – In Nanaimo, 59 teams and 424 walkers participated in the Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY), a winteriffic, family-friendly fundraiser for charities that assist people experiencing hunger and homelessness. The Nanaimo event contributed $123,865 to the record-setting national total of nearly $14 million!

Sutton REALTOR® Ken Welte and his wife Laura showed their support for CNOY by volunteering as First Aid attendants. The couple have extensive training in lifesaving techniques and have volunteered for years with St. John Ambulance and Ladysmith Search and Rescue. They were joined at this event by fellow volunteers including an adorable therapy dog.

“We were on hand to deal with any medical emergencies,” Ken says. “Fortunately, we didn’t have any, but the dog was a big hit and lots of people came and took pictures of us because of the dog.”

Ken notes that St. John Ambulance in Nanaimo has recently begun incorporating therapy dogs into their First Aid presence at community events. It’s an occasion for the public to learn about opportunities in the therapy dog and community First Aid programs.

Tina and Dan at CNOY

As someone who has volunteered at CNOY multiple times, Ken notes, “It was a great night with dedicated people supporting an important cause, and it was way less cold than last year!"

On the same February evening, on the other side of the country, Tina O'Brien, Broker of Record/Owner for Sutton Group - Quantum Realty Inc. in Oakville, Ontario, her husband Dan, and their beloved dog walked in their local CNOY event.

Sutton Quantum raised $2,075 for this national fundraiser that assists some of the estimated 150,000 to 300,000 Canadians who are homeless at some point each year.
